The dark cloth is better on the wall than on the floor

Dark tile is a characterful resource that works much better on walls than on floors, because it doesn’t endure foot traffic, doesn’t show footprints, and doesn’t accumulate visible dust. A dark surface behind a sink, at the back of a shower, as a kitchen backsplash, or behind a headboard creates depth and makes everything in front of it stand out, from the fixtures to the greenery.

It works through contrast and restraint. A single dark wall with the rest of the room in a light tone organizes the space and gives it a focal point without closing it in; all four surfaces in dark tones only work when there is generous space and well-resolved lighting, and in small bathrooms without a window it is almost always a mistake. The fixtures completely change the reading of the whole composition: in brass the result is warm and sophisticated, in matte black more forceful, and in steel more neutral.

In terms of finish, matte and velvet absorb reflections and give a sober, deep look, with a more saturated and stable color from any angle; high-gloss polished tile acts almost like a mirror and multiplies the room’s light, although it requires more frequent cleaning because it shows dried water spots. Inside a shower, especially in hard-water areas, matte and velvet are the most practical option.
