Gain light with light tones

Light-colored porcelain tile is the most effective choice when the goal is to create a greater sense of space and light. Light tones reflect natural light and distribute it throughout the room, so the same space feels larger and more open than with a dark floor covering. In urban homes with limited square footage, in interior rooms without windows, and in north-facing spaces, it is almost always the right choice, and it also leaves the most room to change the furniture over the years.

There are two practical details worth considering before deciding. The first is the finish: in light tones, a matte or satin finish hides footprints and dust better than a high-gloss polished surface, which can be demanding to maintain on large, light-colored areas. The second is the grout: with light tiles and grout in the same tone, the surface reads as a continuous plane, while dark grout turns the layout into a geometric pattern, which may be intentional but is rarely what is desired in large-format tile.

Among light tones, there is a wide range available: pure whites for a crisp, contemporary result, ivories and beiges for a warm look that avoids a cold feeling, and light grays for a more neutral, urban atmosphere. All pair well with our wood-look collections and with decorative pieces, which make it possible to introduce contrast in a single area without giving up the overall brightness of the project.
