Gray, the most specified neutral
Gray is the most versatile shade in the catalog and therefore the most frequently specified in projects. It is neutral enough not to dictate the rest of the decisions and present enough not to disappear, and it works just as well with warm woods as with steel, glass, matte black, and brass. In projects where the furniture or joinery has not yet been decided, or in homes for sale or rent, it is the safest choice.
Within gray, there are decisions that completely change the result. Light grays enlarge spaces and work as a luminous backdrop on measured surfaces; medium grays are the most balanced for circulation areas because they hide wear well; graphite tones add character but require good natural light so they do not close in the space. And the undertone matters as much as the lightness: a cool gray, with a bluish base, leans toward an industrial and contemporary look, while a warm gray, with an earthy base, brings it closer to the domestic and ages better with woods.
In terms of finish, matte is the one that best keeps gray stable against changes in light throughout the day, while polished brightens it and adds reflective depth.
