In the heart of Lomas de Chapultepec, one of Mexico City’s most emblematic areas, there is a corner of tranquility and authenticity that transports visitors to a rural, natural setting. This restaurant is a project that takes its name from the word “Zagala,” which refers to a young shepherdess, and encapsulates the essence of this unique place.
With an area of 500 m2, it stands as an oasis of countryside inspiration in the middle of the bustling city. Behind this project is Lucio Gutiérrez of LG Arquitectos, who led the architecture and interior design.
The essence of this project is the inspiration that comes from the countryside and its protagonist. The restaurant is not only dedicated to providing a high-quality culinary experience, but also pays tribute to the natural elements that have been fundamental in the life of a shepherdess. The cuisine is based on animal and plant products, which become the pillars of the menu and the design of the place.
One of the most notable features of this restaurant is its unpretentious sincerity. Both the architecture and the interior design reflect the authenticity of the countryside, avoiding any unnecessary artifice. Upon entering the place, diners are welcomed by a terrace with a lush jacaranda tree, which creates a play of light and shadow while transporting them to a world of tranquility.
Materials and wood are standout elements throughout the space, from the terrace to the interior of the restaurant. The color palette, inspired by the surrounding nature, combines shades of green, rosewood, caramel, and earth, blending harmoniously to evoke the beauty of the countryside in every corner.
Art also plays a fundamental role in the restaurant’s atmosphere. Photographs of flocks and sheep adorn the walls, connecting diners with rural life. In addition, handcrafted pieces add authentic, textured touches to the space.
One of the most striking features of Zagala is its gray marble fireplace, which not only elegantly divides the spaces, but also adds warmth and a touch of sophistication. The staircase design and the plant-based palette are inspired by cornfields and wheat fields, and are complemented by sheep sculptures that reinforce the connection with the rural theme.
The rooftop, another magical space in the venue, is adorned with jacarandas and textures that evoke sheep’s wool, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere that has become a favorite among diners.
In terms of floor and wall design, the restaurant features a geometric Clifford porcelain tile floor, which adds a modern and dynamic touch to the space. Meanwhile, the wall is adorned with Madison Light geometric porcelain tile, which blends harmoniously with the restaurant’s overall concept.
This restaurant is much more than that: it is an experience that fuses high-quality Spanish cuisine with the authenticity of the countryside and nature. This project shows that inspiration can be found in the simplest roots, and that even in the middle of the city, it is possible to create a corner of tranquility and authenticity that transports diners to a rural, natural world.
